FAQ:
Q: Will it be possible to work with local artists?
A: Our experience says that it is very difficult to establish a good contact between local artists and artists visiting the Residency.
Q: What should I be aware of?
A: We have an extremely sharp and intense light up here. Especially in the spring from March to June. That means that you should bring materials / equipments suited for intensive light (white paint, special films for the camera etc.).
Q: What should I bring?
A: The residency is fully equipped regarding kitchen facilities, bathroom with towels, bed room with everything needed. According to the season you should bring practical cloth.
Q: What can I expect to buy in the shop?
A: There is one super market and a few kiosks’s where you can by all the basics for cooking a meal. Specially in the end of the winter vegetables can be rare and expensive (and not always good looking). Prices a quite high for all goods – specially alcohol and cigarettes.
Q: Can I buy any meat from the Fishermen and Hunter?
A: There is this local market close to the supermarket, where you from time to time can by fish (mostly halibut and catfish) and meat (mostly seal; walrus, narwhal and polar bear is seldom available). There is no opening hour for the local market – they just sell whenever they have something to sell. Apart from the local market it is possible to buy fish directly from the fishermen in the harbour.
Q: Can I go travelling in the area?
A: Upernavik is a small Island – and you can easily walk around the Island in a few hours. Visits to the Settlements can be arranged by helicopter. A return ticket costs about DKR 1200,- to any Settelement – accommodation in the Settlement can be arranged in the Service House at DKR 150,- pr. Night.
Boat trips must be arranged locally.
Q: Can I walk on the ice?
A: From December to April there use to be ice around Upernavik. In these years we experience quite a change in the ice. This means that the ice forms very late (January) and break up very early (march-april). This also means that the ice never get a change to grow very thick and therefore it is very unsafe to go to the ice on your own. If you like to go you should certainly go with one of the locals.
